Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award

Oxbow, in conjunction with AEMV, is proud to present the Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award, an annual award to recognize excellence and innovation in the field of exotic mammal health. Nominations may be based on a sustained effort or an extraordinary single achievement in any or all of the following areas of exotic mammal care:

Exotic Companion Mammal Medicine and Techniques - NAVC Continuing Education 3-Day Course
May 23-26, 2010 in Orlando, Florida

Exotic companion mammals, in particular the rabbit and the ferret, are gaining in popularity as pets and are being presented to the veterinarian in ever-increasing number.

This course will present to both the new and seasoned practitioner advances in sedation, anesthesia, analgesia and monitoring through alternatives to common elective surgeries and more challenging surgeries, such as right adrenalectomy, enucleation and rhinotomy. Techniques to enhance patient survival are emphasized. Alternative
elective procedures (pre-scrotal castration, flank (variectomy) will be performed on live animals in a survival setting. More invasive procedures will be presented in a highly visual lecture style and practiced on cadavers of various species. Participants may proceed at their own pace throughout the course. The third day will focus on more
common disease presentations.

AEMV Announces Research Fund for 2010

AEMV announced and began accepting contributions for a fund to promote clinical research that will be of benefi t to veterinary care of exotic companion mammals. The official AEMV Research Fund was announced and got off to a phenomenal start during the Scientific Session on Sunday, August 9th. Nearly $2,000.00 was raised at the annual conference. Dr. Joerg Mayer is the Research Fund Chair and progress on the fund, application process, etc. will be posted on the site so stay tuned for details.

Dr. Dan Johnson, AEMV Treasurer, was surprised by the announcement that if $1,000.00 was raised by the end of the day of our session, he would shave his legs during the annual business meeting. Needless to say, our goal was surpassed by noon with almost $1,500.00. AEMV thanks Dan for being such a good sport about the event and to all the donors for their generosity.

Recipient of the Oxbow Animal Health Award Announced

AEMV President, Dr. Cathy Johnson-Delaney is the recipient of the first Oxbow Animal Health Exotic Mammal Health Professional Award. Murdock, NE, August 24, 2009 --Oxbow Animal Health, a leader in providing premium nutrition for small exotic animals worldwide, has named Dr. Cathy Johnson-Delaney as the winner of the 2009 Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award. Established in 2009, the Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award is an annual award presented to an animal health professional who advances the field of exotic mammal medicine and care. Dr. Johnson-Delaney, a veterinarian specializing in avian/exotic animal medicine in the greater Puget Sound area, was honored with the award at the 2009 AEMV/AAV Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on August 9th, followed by a reception in her honor on August 11th.

“Cathy Johnson-Delaney exemplifies all of the qualities symbolized by the Oxbow Animal Health Exotic Mammal Health Award,” said John Miller, President of Oxbow Animal Health. “From her unwavering presence in both practice and professional organizations to a publishing and presentation record that is an undeniable testament to her dedication to scholarship and continued education within the field, Cathy’s distinguished career as a veterinarian represents a commitment not just to present health of the exotic industry, but a commitment to the future as well.”

Dr. Johnson-Delaney’s many professional appointments include serving as President of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians, as Medical Director at the Washington Ferret Rescue & Shelter in Kirkland, Washington, and as attending veterinarian at NW Zoological Supply, Inc/Tarantulas.com and at the Oregon Tiger Sanctuary in Eagle Point, Oregon. Dr. Johnson-Delaney is the consulting veterinarian at the Pacific Primate Sanctuary in Haiku, Maui, and treasurer and webmaster for the Association of NW Avian & Exotic Veterinarians. Cathy is the past president of AAV—an office she held from 1994 to 1995.

The Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award is based on excellence in one or more of the following areas: exhibiting leadership in the field of exotic mammal health, advancing the understanding of clinical diseases and treatments in exotic mammal pets, promoting the field of exotic mammal medicine, promoting the field of exotic mammal nutrition or providing innovation to the field of exotic mammal medicine. Nominations are made by submitting a CV and letter of recommendation describing the individual and how they exemplify the above qualities. Nominations for the Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award, including the CV and a letter of recommendation, must be received by no later than May 1st of the award year, and should be sent to Dr. Micah Kohles at Oxbow Animal Health at 29012 Mill Rd. ABVP Exotic Companion Mammal Specialty

On April 12, 2008, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) granted provisional recognition to the first completely new veterinary specialty since 1993, called Exotic Companion Mammal Practice (ECM).

The following Diplomates obtained their certification following the successful completion of examinations held on November 6‐8, 2009, in Chicago, IL.
